Deer skeleton serigraph mono prints on birch panel

I made these late last year and they were one of the funnest projects I’ve worked on in a while. They are printed on birch Faultline panels of course and are about 1 inch deep and are ready to hang. I made the original drawing by blowing ink on paper and using the drawing to expose the screen and create the stencil. I used FW Liquid Inks on the screen to get the bleed outs with the orange and blue colors. I’ll load a handful up in my store, they’re a good deal in my totally unbiased opinion.

I drew these little parrot skulls using a felt tip pen and added color with watercolor and a paintbrush. I’m working on a screen print of Carolina parakeets after a colored print by John James Audubon.

Audubon’s epic print folio “The Birds of America” in book form was the first artist monograph book I checked out at the public library. I was in grade school and had read most of the bird books in the kids section. I remember very clearly discovering the the bird section in the adult part of the library and how excited I was by the overwhelming amount of books loaded with pictures and information.

Your robot knows where to go.

The pattern is a ‘QR code’ and is scannable by smartphones via a scanning ap. The technology behind them is pretty interesting, as is the developing culture around such capabilities. QR codes are physical world hyperlinks, not much different than this link to my tumblr.

Carolina Parakeets

This is part of a little series I’ve been working on inspired by the John James Audubon masterwork “the Birds of America.” I did several sketches and traced the black ink and charcoal drawing from one of the sketches. I crinkled the paper to see if any new patterns would emerge while I was blowing the ink. Got a few, and I really liked the texture I got from using a little charcoal pencil. They really remind me of cave paintings in many ways and I’m excited to start working on the larger series this week. These single parakeets have been prototypes, but the finished pieces will be panels with 7 skeletons.

I printed an edition of 25 on paper and did 7 monoprints on wood panel we made here at Faultline. I’ve been using a little liquid ink in the color prints so it bleeds out on the wood and dissolves the thicker ink a little.

I printed these guys up this morning. These are the most colorful prints I have done in this style so far. I mix the ink on the screen and I’ve just been using one stencil. It’s been a long quest of mine to find a way to print one stencil and have it be unique and interesting to both make and to look at. This skeleton series has been really fun to print so far and I’ve been dropping some liquid inks on the screen to bleed out a little in select spots which is something new for me. I’ll have these and a bunch of my other brand new skeletons at the Sound Room at 2157 Broadway and 22nd Street for First Friday tomorrow in Oakland.

I’m making a bunch of one-of-a-kind screen prints for the pop up show at the Sound Room. I tried some new things today and I’m really digging the results. I’m hanging a whole wall of these guys up at 2147 Broadway and 22nd Street for October’s First Friday in Oakland.

I had a bunch of these panels lying around from a cancelled project so I printed them up at Faultline Artspace. I’m still trying to figure out how to best use all the space around here, but I really like working in the Drawing Room on bigger projects like this. These will be up at Faultline shortly, and I’m bring a stack to the Sound Room on 22nd and Broadway for a little pop-up show for First Friday in October 6-10pm.

Carolina Parakeets.

Here is a little sketch from a new series I’m working on from John James Audubon’s The Birds of America, which was done in the 1830′s and 40′s. I was a giant bird nerd in grade school and remember checking the book version of his famous elephant folio out a few times. The drawing is from the Carolina Parakeets plate.
