Deer skeleton serigraph mono prints on birch panel

I made these late last year and they were one of the funnest projects I’ve worked on in a while. They are printed on birch Faultline panels of course and are about 1 inch deep and are ready to hang. I made the original drawing by blowing ink on paper and using the drawing to expose the screen and create the stencil. I used FW Liquid Inks on the screen to get the bleed outs with the orange and blue colors. I’ll load a handful up in my store, they’re a good deal in my totally unbiased opinion.

“In God We Trust” Screen Print

'In God We Trust' screen print (serigraph)

This was the first print I did after moving to San Francisco in 2005. It was quite a project, I started with about 300 sheets of paper and didn’t have a drying rack. I came up with a hanging system to dry them and I think it took about 10 hours to print each color. And there are I think 5 colors. I get exhausted just thinking about it.

The image is a pair of Apache attack helicopters flying through a smoking oilfield of currency. I took the the image of the helicopters off the Boeing site, I changed the image drastically to suite my purpose and to not infringe on copyrights. I liked the idea of shoving their own propaganda up their butt, not that they noticed.

I’m updating my shopping cart and adding all my available prints, this one is available here.

Hands and Pants 2 Collaboration with John Casey

I was excited to get in on John Casey’s “Hands and Pants 2″ show at the Rare Bird. John Casey starts out by drawing a pair of Hands and Pants and passes the drawing to another artist. I scanned the drawing and added some line work. I printed the lines on the panels and painted into one of them with gouache with a few colors. I printed the lines again on top after the paint was dry.

Your robot knows where to go.

The pattern is a ‘QR code’ and is scannable by smartphones via a scanning ap. The technology behind them is pretty interesting, as is the developing culture around such capabilities. QR codes are physical world hyperlinks, not much different than this link to my tumblr.

2000 Butterfly screen prints

Somehow I overlooked taking photos of this piece until today. I haven’t worked on it since May and it’s not quite done. I want to make 2 or 3 more species and pin another 6 or 7 hundred to the panel. Some of the butterflies are 11 stencils, but most of them are 5-8. They are black cotton printmaking paper and cut out by hand with scissors, which works better than die or laser cutting since they are all different shapes and sizes. It’s kind of a prototype and I’ve been using this piece to figure out a lot of things. Eventually I’d like to do some big installations with 20,000-70,000 thousand butterflies, so I’ve been getting my head around how I’m going to do that. I’m trying to make all the butterflies at least a little different, so that’s been a interesting challenge as well. The second to last image has a real swallowtail in it.

Open Studios and Print Sale

Our building High Street Lofts had an open house with some of the designers and artists. It was the first time doing it so it was a bit of a learning experience. Overall it was a big success. Chris Granillo and Oree came out and hung out with their prints for most of the day. I moved 14 tons of beer for 10 hours the previous day and my back didn’t let me set up the studios as nicely as I would have liked, but it was fun and the next one will be even better.
