One for the “Bay Area Figurative Renaissance” Book

This piece was accepted into a book a few people from the Bay Area Models Guild are putting together. It is inspired by artists working from guild models. And that’s about about all I know. The piece is based on another drawing I did of Sonia, who is a fantastic model I’ve worked with a few times.

The piece is a painted print. The line work was done by blowing ink on a piece of paper, which I then used to make a stencil on a polyester screen. I printed the design on sheets of 22 x 30 inch cotton rag paper. Then I painted over the printed lines with gouache, which is an opaque watercolor. After the painting was done, I printed the line work again on top. Kinda ripped the idea off Warhol. I made 11 prints, if you can call them that, and they are all quite different.

A dik-dik is a small African antelope, BTW. This one likes cheap beer and Ed Hardy clothing.

Finishing Some Drawings in My Studio

Life drawings by Ryan McjunkinI’ve been going through my drawing from the last few months and finishing them up, which includes cleaning up the surface with an eraser, adding dark tones, then fixing them to prevent smearing. I’ve been using milk to fix these, which has really made a huge difference in the way I work. Charcoal smears easily and needs to be fixed or framed to remain pristine. The regular way to fix drawings is to spray a super toxic aerosol over them, which makes a big toxic cloud, makes your stuff stink, and you can’t do it inside. I’ve generally avoided charcoal for that reason, but the milk I can spray in my studio! Super convenient! I have an Iwata airbrush hooked up to a CO2 tank which is silent and portable, instead of an air compressor.

Celebrity Beauty Tips

Something fun I have been creating in my spare time…

Gazellda's Watering Hole cartoon

Shhh... don't tell her.

Elle Macphearson recently got in hot water about making a weird statement admitting she eats rhino horn (story here). She claims it was a bad joke. It’s okay Elle, your not the only one that likes to joke about the slaughter of endangered animals!

Carnivore Skeleton Edition and Variations

Here are a few variations of the edition. Top left is the edition, and the others are one-offs. I’ve been having a lot of fun mixing it up a bit. Lining up the colors is usually very tedious, so it’s been fun just to experiment a little. In the image captions, colors refer to how many different inks were used, and passes refers to how many times a screen or stencil was printed. These are all on 22 x 30 inch paper.

Before and After

Here is a a couple of shots of the same drawing. The one on the left is a 20 minute sketch from a live model. The one on the right is the same drawing after about an equal time cleaning up the sketch a bit with an eraser, and adding some darker tones with Conte Crayon and charcoal pencil.

New and Mixed Media Figure Drawings

New Figure Drawings

I added a page for my new figure drawings as well as one for some older mixed media figure drawings. I’m working on a few projects and have been doing a ton of life drawing. I haven’t worked back into this drawing yet, but I’d like to clean it up a bit and add some darker tones. I’ve been working a bit more descriptively than normal since I’ve been using these for reference.
