The last Live Art Wednesday at Levende

Well… it was a great little run at Levende for Live Art Wednesdays. I had a great time hanging out and meeting lots of great artists. It was also a new experience making art in public for me, and turned out to be helpful in coming up with some new ideas and a giant stack of fun new work. Tons of fun, I will miss it! The Last Live Art Wednesday is Scheduled for June 1st, 2011.

Alligator Skeleton Screen Prints

Finished! These were the longest prints I have ever tried, the image is over 40 inches across on 51 inch black paper. The paper was super curly, so it was a real trick to get the paper to lie flat while I printed. Couldn’t have done it without the vacuum table on my press. I ended up with an edition of 7 prints as pictured. Off to the framers…

Watercolor sketches from ‘Dr. Sketchy’s Cute Girls on Bikes’

Last night was my first Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School event. Dr. Sketchy’s was started by an art school dropout in Brooklyn. I’m pretty sure you have to be an artist to be both a doctor and a college dropout. Overall it was a good event at a great venue at 111 Minna in San Francisco. Lots of fun, with loud music and good drink specials, which draws in a much younger crowd than your typical public figure drawing group. There weren’t easels or much standing room, so I kept it simple with a few felt tip markers and watercolor pans. I’ll definitely be back…

Large Alligator Screen Prints

Alligator skeleton screen prints

These are the largest skeletons I have printed so far. The paper is 23 x 51 inches, and the skeleton is about 41 inches long. I love Stonehenge paper, but Legion stopped making large sheets in black, so I have to buy it on roll now, which is a pain since the paper is thick and hard to get it to lay flat. These prints have been in a press for a few days, so hopefully they will be easier to work with. I have a feeling registering the second color is going to be extremely difficult due to the size and curl of the paper. I might have to switch to large sheets of Somerset paper, which retail for $18 / sheet. Ouch!

Life Drawing

Nude figure drawing

Charcoal and Conte Crayon Life Drawing

Another one from my recent studio sessions. This is a five or seven minute pose. I’ve been doing mostly short poses and have been having a great time. Short poses often have a fresh look that is lacking in the longer poses. I usually start out with a few light lines to map the figure on the page, and then just go for it with some heavier line using a charcoal pencil. A little shading with a Conte Crayon, and that’s it. Sometimes I’ll go back into the drawing after the model has left and darken up some areas, and then fix the drawing with nonfat milk to prevent smearing.

Live Art Wednesday at Levende

Live Art Wednesday at Levende

Once a month I participate in the ‘Live Art Wednesdays’ Event at Levende in downtown Oakland. Tonight I will be doing a few small skeleton screen prints to start, and then drawing to finish the evening. Mention this post and I’ll give you a free limited edition screen print (while they last)! Lots of great artists, and we hang our work and sell it for reasonable prices. Come support the arts in Oakland while enjoying happy hour specials!

Figure Drawing in the Studio

Charcoal Figure Drawing

Charcoal Figure Drawing

I’ve been lucky enough to get some models into my studio lately for some private sessions. It’s amazing how different the dynamics are from group sessions. I’m able to focus better and the percentage of drawings that come out that I like is several times greater. It’s also nice that I don’t have to transport my drawings, since they always get smeared on the way home. I’ll post more later. Thank you models!

I printed these up yesterday. It is a 5 x 7 inch screen print on black paper. It has two overlapping colors, creating the appearance of a third.
