Another Figurative Serigraph

Nude in Boots screen print

New Figurative serigraph

This is another screen print I made using the new technique I am developing. I used a Conte Crayon and charcoal for the drawing and used the original drawing as my positive for the screen prints. The drawing is on translucent paper to allow light to travel through the paper and set up the emulsion. The charcoal blocks out the light and when the screen is washed, the emulsion washes out, but only where the charcoal blocked out the light. Then ink is passed through the screen and you get a print with your original image. The dark lines transfer wonderfully and have the same textures as the original drawing. The tones and gradients are a little trickier to capture the subtleties of the crayon and charcoal.

New Screen Print Series

These are a few of the new screen prints or serigraphs I have been working on. I have been experimenting with using charcoal drawings as positives for transferring images onto screens with photo emulsion. Typically silk screen positives are made from clear plastic film drawn on with ink or paint, or by using digital print outs. I have made a few by scanning the drawing and making a digital transparency, which worked well. However these skip the digital work all together and don’t use any plastic at all. I drew the positive while the model was standing there and used the drawing to make a stencil. It has taken quite a bit of experimentation to get the drawings to translate into a screen print given all the variables such as exposure times, ink opacity, and darkness of the original drawing.

This is a screen print (serigraph) I have in my show at Zza’s Wine Bar and Art Gallery. The show is up until the 24th of February. Check it out if you haven’t already. And if you have, thanks so much!

These prints pictured are the first prints I made on my new 1970′s Cincinnati one arm squeegee press, a.k.a. “The One Armed Bandit.”
